There are two types of skin swelling benign and pernicious. The distinction between them is rather difficult. Most of the times it is essential that these skin injuries be removed surgically and examined by a prosector. We can have the diagnosis after the tissular test .
There are two reasons to make us treat a benign swelling.
- organic ,when swelling gets bigger, changes its colour ,extrudes, causes pain or itching.
- aesthetic, when there is a distortion owing to its position, size or colour.
Skin carcinomas
Skin carcinomas are the most common type of neoplasia in mankind.
(there is a percentage of 40%-50% in people over 65 ). Basecellular and
spinocallular carcinomas are in this category. The causes are excessive
exposure to sunlight, genetic DNA defects and chemical causes.
It is encouraging that skin carcinomas have a high cure percentage ,90-100% for basecellular and 80% for spinocellular.
It is understandable that the sooner they are removed the better results we have.
To sum up: “ Any persistant skin defect should be removed at once.”
Melanocarcinoma
It is the most pernicious neoplasia that we can find on the skin and
mycoderma and it is the most quickly developed after lung cancer in
women . It behaves quite strangely and it can even be self cured. It
can affect all races but mostly the white race.In recent years , there
has been an increase in melanocarcinomas and a reduction in death rate
due to its early diagnosis. Its appearance also depends on the
geographical features of an area , which means the duration of
sunshine, since it frequently appears in countries near the equator. As
for the sex, its appearance is more frequent in women (54%) than in men
(46%)
Melanocarcinoma rarely appears before puberty , not because of the
hormones level, this happens because spiluses appear during adult life.
During pregnancy spiluses can often become melanocarcinomas. This is
not scientifically confirmed and people often think that the same
spilus just changes colour because of the hormones produced by the
hypophysis and the estrogenic produced during pregnancy.
To treat a melanocarcinoma you have to remove it surgically as soon as possible.
You have to remove it completely.( Most of the times a skin grafting is
needed.) Over the age of 12 every “nevus “ should be examined carefully
by a dermatologist or a plastic surgeon and removed if it is regarded
as “suspect”.
It is better to have an “innocent” nevus removed than have a potential melanocarcinoma.
